Is there a limit to how many times a debt collector can call me?

Federal law doesn’t give a specific limit on the number of calls a debt collector can place to you. A debt collector may not call you repeatedly or continuously intending to annoy, abuse, or harass you or others who share the number.

You do have a right to tell the debt collector to stop calling you.

The CFPB has prepared sample letters that you can use to respond to a debt collector who is trying to collect a debt along with tips on how to use these letters.  The sample letters may help you to get information, set limits or stop any further communication, or protect some of your rights.

If you tell a debt collector in writing to stop contacting you, it may not contact you again except:

  • To say there will be no further contact
  • To notify you that the debt collector or the creditor may take some specific action it is legally allowed to take, such as filing a lawsuit against you

Warning: Telling a debt collector to stop contacting you does not stop the debt collector or creditor from using other legal ways to collect the debt from you if you owe it, including a lawsuit against you or making a negative report to a consumer reporting company.
