Your Money, Your Goals expands its reach

Many of us run into challenges managing our money. For consumers with low-to-moderate incomes, it can be especially hard to know where to get accurate, unbiased financial information to help make informed money decisions.

That’s why, in 2013, we launched Your Money, Your Goals, a comprehensive toolkit and accompanying training that helps social services and legal aid program staff, and community volunteers provide the people they serve with information on various financial topics. Whether someone wants to start saving for emergencies, learn how to improve their credit, build a plan to pay down debt, or  just stretch their money a little further, Your Money, Your Goals can help.

New community partners for Your Money, Your Goals

Since we began developing Your Money, Your Goals in 2012, we’ve worked with more than 50 public, private, and non-profit organizations across the country to implement Your Money, Your Goals trainings. To expand our reach to a greater number of frontline staff and volunteers, we are pleased to team up with 20 entities  that include federal agencies, social services, legal aid, and volunteer-based organizations and networks across the country. These organizations, which cover more than 35 states, will begin working with us this year. Here’s a look at some of the partners and what they’re working on:

Federal and local government

The Office of the Special Trustee for American Indians, which oversees the administration of trust and Individual Indian Money accounts, will offer training to its 50 fiduciary trust officers and staff as part of its commitment to empower Indian Country with financial skills.

  • The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Cooperative Extension Service is continuing its Your Money, Your Goals training for a second year, with financial educators planning to hold training events in over 20 communities across 12 states: Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Iowa, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio, Texas, Utah, and Virginia.
  • The cities of Boulder and Denver, Colo., will work together to train state and local social and human services staff in their communities to share Your Money, Your Goals tools with the people they serve.
  • The New York City Administration for Children’s Services will provide training for its nonprofit partner organizations that deliver its services to families.
  • Rapides Workforce Development Board in La. and The WorkPlace in Conn. will share tools with job seekers.

National and local nonprofits

  • The National Council of La Raza will train representatives from 120 of its 300 affiliates across the country to provide Your Money, Your Goals training in their communities.
  • The Points of Light Foundation is training volunteer financial coaches in over 100 cities and will make training available through its “Military Initiatives” program and “HandsOn Network” of organizations that engage volunteers.
  • Nonprofit organizations are planning to serve a broad range of participants in housing, small business development, Head Start, and other programs in Brownsville, Texas; Portland, Ore.; San Francisco, Calif.; Wyandotte, Mich.; and the greater New York City-Northern New Jersey area.

Statewide and regional organizations

  • Local organizations are joining with statewide and regional coalitions in Illinois, Indiana, Florida, Nevada, New Mexico, and Washington to lay the groundwork to serve dozens of local communities with the Your Money, Your Goals toolkit.
  • The Legal Aid Society of Hawaii will offer training to its locations that serve self-represented clients to help empower them to address the financial challenges that may be associated with their legal challenges.

The 20 organizations have a collective goal of training 7,000 frontline staff. Your Money, Your Goals  trainings will equip case managers, legal aid attorneys and other staff and volunteers with information and tools to help them talk with the people they serve about setting and reaching their own financial goals. The toolkit covers a number of topics including saving for emergencies, tracking and managing income and spending, building and improving credit, managing debt, and using consumer financial products and services.

Putting the toolkit to use in your community

We’re also holding a series of free webinars for anyone who’d like to learn how to put Your Money, Your Goals’ tools and information to work in their community. The webinar training will cover how to use the training resources to plan your own training workshop, how others have adapted the training to fit their organization’s needs, and where you can order free copies of the toolkit, which is available in English and Spanish.

If you’d like to join an upcoming webinar to learn how to lead or facilitate a Your Money, Your Goals training, contact us at Empowerment@consumerfinance.gov. You can sign up for email updates about Your Money, Your Goals, financial empowerment, and serving economically vulnerable consumers.
