For most loans, servicers cannot require you to repay your skipped payments in a lump sum once the forbearance period ends. So, if you only hear about a lump-sum repayment, ask about other options. Generally, there are four common ways to repay the money due from your forbearance.

2. Contact your mortgage servicer to discuss your options
Since repayment options vary depending on your loan, you'll need to contact your mortgage servicer. (This is the company that you send your mortgage payments to each month.)

When you're ready to call your servicer, asking these questions will help ensure that you get the information you need about repaying your forbearance. Check your servicer's website before you call to see if they have additional information. Have your account number handy.
- What options are available to help me repay my forbearance?
- When do I have to start making payments again?
- What will my monthly payment be?
- What is the status of my escrow account?
- What if I don't think I can afford my new monthly payment?
- Will it take me longer to pay off my mortgage?
- What happens to my missed payments if I sell my home?
- Do I need to provide or sign any documents?

Submit a complaint
If you have a complaint with your mortgage or forbearance plan, tell us about your issue—we'll forward it to the company and work to get you a response, generally within 15 days.
