Cash America International, Inc.
On November 21, 2013, the Bureau issued an order against Cash America International, Inc., one of the largest short-term, small-dollar lenders in the country. The Bureau found that Cash America violated the Military Lending Act by illegally overcharging servicemembers and their families; the Consumer Financial Protection Act of 2010 (CFPA) by failing to provide required information during a Bureau examination; and the CFPA by filing inaccurate affidavits and pleadings in debt collection actions. The order required Cash America to pay up to $14 million in refunds to consumers and a $5 million penalty.
On July 22, 2025, pursuant to its authority under 12 U.S.C. § 5563(b)(3), the Bureau terminated the order. Cash America has fulfilled certain obligations under the order, including, among other things, paying a civil money penalty of $5 million and providing redress to consumers. The predecessor entity no longer exists and the products addressed in the 2013 order are unconnected to the products of FirstCash.
