Instead of receiving a confirmation, the automated system instead SIGNED ME UP for a security freeze instead and then noted that I will receive the mail via USPS in 7-10 business days. There was NO option to speak with a customer on their toll free line. \n\nSince I need the information NOW, I attempted to find another number for Experian and located one via an online search of comments another disgruntled consumer posted as XXXX. Experian asked me a number of security questions and then noted I did not answer the last one correctly. However, the wording of the security question, I believe, is meant to intentionally trip up the responder by asking about the mortgage payment per month. It was not clear whether the mortgage payment was the actual payment I specifically was making, whether it was the total mortgage payment ( as I co-own a mortgage with another person ), etc. They noted there was nothing they could do for me and I would have to wait 7-10 business days via USPS to receive my PIN in order to remove the security freeze. This is not a reasonable amount of time to wait when one needs to access credit.\n\nI asked to speak with a manager. They noted there wasn't one available and 'XXXX XXXX would call me back that day and he never did. I called back again a few hours later. Another service representative handled my call and accused me of placing a security freeze via the automated system and they couldn't help me that i would have to wait 7-10 business days and there was simply nothing they could do about it. \n\nI NEVER authorized a security freeze on my account in the first place and why would I want to put one on when I want to make sure that I do NOT want a security freeze on my account?? I asked to speak with a manager again. The representative tried to dissuade me from talking to a manager and noted that the manager will not be able to do anything for me.\n\nI finally was transferred to a manager who noted I would have to either wait the 7-10 business days or pay {$20.00} to receive the PIN sent to my address in 1-2 business days. I had no problems with the other 2 credit reporting agencies, and I was able to connect swiftly with them to confirm no security freeze within minutes. However, with Experian : 1 ) they are doing a real disservice to consumers by not being transparent about their customer service line where you are able to access a real live human 2 ) they do not believe the customer when they ask to confirm there is no security freeze and instead put a security freeze on your account without prior authorization 3 ) they blamed me several times for putting the security freeze on my account that same day and said there is nothing wrong with their system 4 ) they extorted cash out of the consumer in order to get access to my pin in a reasonable timeframe ( the other option is to wait 7-10 business days which is extremely unreasonable ) or send a lot of personally identifiable sensitive information via USPS, which is ridiculous given part of Experians whole purpose is to help consumers protect their credit.","date_sent_to_company":"2019-05-21T21:48:36.000Z","issue":"Problem with fraud alerts or security freezes","sub_product":"Credit reporting","zip_code":"22180","tags":"Servicemember","has_narrative":true,"complaint_id":"3249548","timely":"Yes","company_response":"Closed with non-monetary relief","submitted_via":"Web","company":"Experian Information Solutions Inc.","date_received":"2019-05-21T21:19:15.000Z","state":"VA","company_public_response":"Company has responded to the consumer and the CFPB and chooses not to provide a public response","sub_issue":null},"highlight":{"complaint_what_happened":["I had no problems with the other 2 credit reporting agencies, and I was able to connect swiftly with them to confirm no security freeze within minutes."],"product":["Credit reporting, credit repair services, or other personal consumer reports"],"issue":["Problem with fraud alerts or security freezes"],"company_public_response":["Company has responded to the consumer and the CFPB and chooses not to provide a public response"]},"sort":[17.921976,"3249548"]},{"_index":"complaint-public-v1","_id":"14406103","_score":17.662592,"_source":{"product":"Credit reporting or other personal consumer reports","complaint_what_happened":"Equifax, I received your letter requesting for the list of missing accounts. I have a security freeze on my credit account for security reasons. I was shocked at how many \" soft inquiries '' were listed on my report. Two companies are creditors ( as in credit card companies ) but the rest of the companies ARE NOT CREDITORS AND HAVE NO RIGHTS TO ACCESS MY ACCOUNT. \n\nAccording to XXXX A soft credit inquiry gives the same information that a hard credit inquiry does, including your payment and credit history, debt management, any derogatory marks you may have and your credit score. \n\nExperian calls them soft inquiries as opposed to hard inquiries and uses that designation as their excuse to release my credit history to anyone that requests it. My wife and I receive no protection from having a security freeze since Experian is ignoring our security freeze and issuing credit reports in spite of the freeze. Experian states soft inquiries are not disputable. Experian also states that Soft inquiries are usually initiated by others, like companies making promotional offers of credit or your lender conducting periodic reviews of your existing credit accounts. \n\nThe Consumer Financial Protection Bureau states on their web site A security freeze prevents prospective creditors from accessing your credit file. Creditors typically won't offer you credit if they can't access your credit reporting file, so a security freeze, also called a credit freeze, prevents you or others from opening accounts in your name. Security freezes can be useful in preventing an identity thief from opening a new credit account in your name. \nOnly a limited number of entities can see your file while a freeze is in place, including : Creditors of accounts you currently hold Certain government entities like child support agencies Companies that you've hired to monitor your credit file Under these guidelines only 2 companies would have legal access to my files. We have credit cards from 2 different financial institutions so I have 2 creditors entitled to look at my credit history. We have no government entities accessing our credit reports and we have not hired any firm to monitor our credit file. The two credit card companies legally entitled to access my account are among the numerous soft inquiries on my most recent credit report. \nNone of the other soft inquiries are creditors for my wife and me or fit into the other 2 listed categories, which means, by the federal guidelines they are prospective creditors and should not be allowed access to our credit history.\n\nUnder Federal law I would assume companies making promotional offers of credit are exactly the same thing that the CFPB refers to as prospective creditors and prospective creditors are not supposed to be able to access my credit reports. Experian is essentially admitting they are not honoring the credit freeze on our accounts by calling their release of our personal information soft inquiries. It appears to me they are using soft inquiries as a means to circumvent our credit freeze and putting our credit history at risk of identity theft. \n\nFair Credit Reporting Act states You have a right to place a security freeze on your credit report, which will prohibit a consumer reporting agency from releasing information in your credit report without your express authorization. Experian has never requested authorization to release my credit files. \nI have tried to contact Experian by telephone but talking to a live person is apparently not an option. I tried 3 different telephone numbers and got only a robotic voice at each one. Experian has succeeded in forcing consumers to deal with a robotic voice. I was never able to reach a live person. Nor does Experian provide an email address for contact. Experian should not be able to hide from the general public so easily. I chose not to write a letter to Experian because there is no guarantee that Experian will respond or how long they will take to respond. Since my credit information is apparently being illegally placed at risk to anyone willing to pay the fee I chose to file a complaint and try to stop Experian from subjecting my credit information to further risk of identity theft.\n\nUndoubtedly my wife 's credit file is being subjected to the same illegal activity by Experian and XXXX and XXXX XXXX but I want to see how this complaint works before I deal with the rest of this. \n\nBased on the information posted on the CFPB web page Experian is violating the law and I ask that the CFPB stop them. Their lack of security is bad enough for an institution that is holding such delicate private information, let alone not holding them responsible to correct & protect the situation. \n\nI also have a client that is currently held up to enter a Purchase contract of sale, because Equifax will not lift the freeze off her account via the website or call, but she has to send delicate private info to them via regular mail to their office, ( thus putting herself more openly accessed to fraud ), for Equifax to lift her freeze.
