Responsibilities


The following are the duties of this position at the CN-52 (Broadly equivalent to the GS-12). If you are selected at a lower grade level, you will have the opportunity to learn to perform all these duties, and will receive training to help you grow in this position.


  • Serve as a senior paralegal in the Office of Enforcement. Provide guidance and mentoring to more junior paralegals and support staff.
  • Research legislation, regulations, and precedents for the most complex cases or issues surrounding Federal consumer financial law and consumer protection litigation. Independently perform extensive legal research and analysis in support of staff attorneys. Apply the results of this research to the specific problem or issue presented, and formulate a recommended course of action. Make recommendations to attorneys based on findings, and note any discrepancies in material or other supporting documents that have been submitted in evidence of claims. Search for legal precedent in indices and computerized legal reference systems and analyze their applicability to individual cases. Prepare summaries of research findings.
  • Examine case files and determine issues and sufficiency of evidence or documentation; search for legal precedents and analyze their applicability to include the preparation of digest of points on law involved. Prepare litigation reports; summarize the factual situation; and prepare briefs and other litigation papers or advisory opinions for review/approval by attorneys. Analyze legal issues involved in extra-agency requests for Bureau records and employee witness testimony; analyze subpoenaed documents for possible patterns and trends relevant to litigation. Develop and justify recommendations for Bureau actions on legal issues. Brief attorneys on issues in preparation for hearings and court appearances. Attend court sessions and administrative hearings in full support of attorneys pursuing the Bureau interests in litigation. Testify in court or administrative hearings concerning exhibits prepared. Coordinate actions with other Federal agencies or state and local jurisdictions that have closely related responsibilities.
  • Conduct interviews and assist staff attorneys in interviewing potential witnesses. Provide litigation case management and organize cases for court presentation; and use electronic databases and software programs in organizing and sorting evidentiary materials.
  • Gather, organize, and assemble legal documents and case files requiring attachments, enclosures, and authorities in highly sensitive cases. Maintain records of all work in the office and monitor the process through various stages of processing. Review ongoing correspondence for form, accuracy, conformance with procedural instructions and grammatical correctness. Obtain necessary signatures and approvals, and dispatch completed work products.
